*Invitation to participate: world-wide review of PRESS_oo , an extension
of the FRBR_oo model. *
You are invited to comment on PRESSoo
<http://www.ifla.org/node/9452?og=587> as part of a world-wide review.
Comments are due by *April 20, 2015*. The full text of PRESSoo
<http://www.ifla.org/files/assets/cataloguing/frbr/pressoo_v0.5.pdf> is
available at the IFLA website.
PRESS_OO is an object-oriented model, defined as an extension of the
FRBR_OO model. FRBR_OO version 2.2 is also undergoing world-wide review
<http://www.ifla.org/node/9451?og=587> and the full text of FRBR v.2.2
<http://www.ifla.org/files/assets/cataloguing/frbr/frbroo_v2.2.pdf> is
available there.
PRESS_OO strives to capture a conceptualization of bibliographic
information relating to continuing resources. PRESS_OO remains based on
the high-level concepts of FRBR, but goes more into the details about
the specificities of continuing resources. The intention of the
developers of PRESS_OO was to solve the issues raised by the application
of the FRBR model to continuing resources, while retaining the key
notions that characterize the FR family of models.
PRESS_OO was developed in 2012-2014 by a working group consisting of
representatives from the ISSN International Centre and the Bibliothčque
nationale de France (BnF). In this process, some members from the BnF
contributed expertise with the modelling techniques used to define
FRBR_OO , while members of the ISSN International Centre and other
members from the BnF contributed the relevant domain expertise in the
description of continuing resources.
In August 2014, the FRBR Review Group endorsed PRESS_OO as a valid
extension of the FRBR_OO model: PRESS_OO is a valid ontology that can
be used to express the semantic relationships embedded in descriptions
provided by libraries (i.e., bibliographic and authority data) for
continuing resources in a way that is fully compatible with FRBR_OO . At
its meeting on April 4, 2014 in Den Haag, the CIDOC CRM Special Interest
Group endorsed PRESS_OO as a valid and technically compatible extension
of CIDOC CRM and FRBR_OO . Please see the statement
<http://www.ifla.org/files/assets/cataloguing/frbr/statement_on_pressoo_august_2014.pdf>
for more details, including a summary of the salient differences between
PRESS_OO and the three entity-relationship models, FRBR/FRAD/FRSAD.
During the meeting in August 2014, the FRBR Review Group also committed
to bringing the latest version of FRBR_OO and_PRESS_OO through the
process of world-wide review as a step towards formal approval of these
models by IFLA.
Comments will be reviewed by the FRBR Review Group and by the Working
Group on FRBR/CRM Dialogue.
