*Invitation to participate: world-wide review of version 2.2 of FRBRoo *

You are invited to comment on FRBRoo version 2.2
<http://www.ifla.org/node/9451?og=587> as part of a world-wide review.
Comments are due by *April 20, 2015*.The full text of FRBRoo 2.2

available at the IFLA website.

FRBR_OO is an interpretation of the FR family of models using
object-oriented methodology. It is not the same as the three existing
entity-relationship models, FRBR, FRAD and FRSAD, nor is it the same as
the consolidated entity-relationship model currently under development.
But the ontology described in FRBR_OO is based on IFLA's
conceptualization of bibliographic and authority data such as expressed
in the FRBR, FRAD and FRSAD entity-relationship models, although it also
somewhat deviates from the original models on some points. However, the
differences between FRBR_OO version 2.2 and the FRBR, FRAD and FRSAD
models are not sufficient for FRBR_OO version 2.2 to be regarded as a
distinct model, but as a related model.

The original FRBR_OO version 1 was published in 2009 and was based on
FRBR alone. The updated version of FRBR_OO, version 2.2, is based on all
three FR models and it is the version currently under review.

The purpose of developing FRBR_OO has been to lay the groundwork for
data interoperability between the library and the museum communities. As
stated in the introduction, "The main goal is to reach a common view of
cultural heritage information with respect to modelling, standards,
recommendations, and practices." FRBR_OO was developed_through dialogue
between representatives from IFLA and ICOM-CIDOC (International Council
for Museums – International Committee on Documentation). The museum and
libraries communities each developed their own conceptual models at
roughly the same time: FRBR and CIDOC CRM (the conceptual reference
model of CIDOC). FRBR_OO is the result of harmonizing the models of the
two communities, extending the scope of CIDOC CRM to bibliographic
information and the scope of FRBR/FRAD/FRSAD to cultural information.
Its development has been the responsibility of the Working Group on
FRBR/CRM Dialogue.

In August 2014, the FRBR Review Group endorsed version 2.0[1]
<file:///C:%5CUsers%5COliver%5CDownloads%5Cweb%20site%20%282%29.docx#_ftn1>
of the FRBR_OO model (an object-oriented interpretation of the FRBR,
FRAD and FRSAD models in the form of an extension of the CIDOC CRM
model) as a valid ontology that can be used to express the semantic
relationships embedded in descriptions provided by libraries (i.e.,
bibliographic and authority data) for the entities that make up the
"bibliographic universe." Please see the statement
<http://www.ifla.org/files/assets/cataloguing/frbr/statement_on_frbroo_august_2014.pdf>
for more details, including a summary of the salient differences between
FRBR_OO and the three entity-relationship models, FRBR/FRAD/FRSAD.

An early version of FRBR_OO (version 0.9) was approved in principle by
the FRBR Review Group in 2008. During the meeting in August 2014, the
FRBR Review Group committed to bringing the latest version of FRBR_OO
through the process of world-wide review as a step towards formal
approval of this model by IFLA.

Comments will be reviewed by the FRBR Review Group and by the Working
Group on FRBR/CRM Dialogue.
