1. Organizational Context

 

The World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) is a United Nations specialized agency.

Its WIPO Knowledge Center (WKC) is the custodian of the knowledge repository, which is an

authoritative source for global IP academic research. The WKC oversees WIPO's physical

and digital library collection, in addition to the dissemination of WIPO publications.

Previously called the WIPO Library, the Section's name and responsibilities changed in May

2021 to reflect its expanding role.

 

The evolution of the knowledge repository requires a qualified Fellow to assist with

augmenting its digital resources, in particular for the use by researchers in developing and

least developed countries. Emphasis will be placed on acquiring robust, reliable and peer-

viewed resources for research on issues related to intellectual property.

 

WIPO has established a fellowship to assist with WKC activities, which will provide the Fellow

with experience to strengthen their knowledge and competence in their field.

 

 

 

2. Duties and responsibilities

 

The Fellow shall work under the supervision of the Head, WIPO Knowledge Center (WKC).

The Fellow shall provide support in the following areas:

 

a) researching and incorporating resources into the knowledge repository that can be

directly accessed by all users from around the world;

 

b) creating relevant knowledge packages that can be showcased on the WKC webpage;

 

c) analyzing current digital resources and services, identifying the information gaps for users

from developing countries, and then establishing measurement techniques as to whether gaps

are being filled and meeting users' needs;

 

d) promoting best practices and building collaboration within WIPO and with external

stakeholders to ensure meaningful engagement with the WKC;

 

e) testing new features and functions of the WKC services;

 

f) participating in any webinars, meetings or presentations as requested by the Head, WKC,

including performing any administrative tasks related to the organization of such events;

g) any other tasks as requested by the Head, WIPO Knowledge Center.

 

 

 

3. Requirements

 

 

 

a) Education:

 

Essential: First-level degree in library, information science, knowledge management or a

related field. Recognized professional qualification.

 

 

b) Languages:

 

Essential: Excellent knowledge of written and spoken English and a good knowledge of

French.

 

Desirable: Good knowledge of at least one of WIPO's other official languages.

 

c) Experience:

 

Essential: At least one year experience in professional library services. Experience with

an integrated library system (ILS). Demonstrated proficiency in data gathering, including

usage statistics, and analysis techniques to support assessment activities.

 

Desirable: Demonstrated experience in providing outreach programs and activities related

to a digital library environment.

 

d) Knowledge and skills:

 

Essential:

 

i. Strong awareness of the relationship between digital resources and library outreach

services, in relation to all user groups, while respecting digital licenses;

ii. Excellent written and oral communication skills;

iii. Ease and tact in personal contacts at all levels.

 

Desirable:

 

i. Knowledge of bibliometrics and/or altmetrics;

ii. Proficiency in webpage design and content management software with an ability to

create web content working directly in HTML.

 

d) WIPO Core Competencies:

4. Terms and Conditions

 

a) Term of fellowship: up to 12 months, with the possibility of renewable up to an

additional 12 months, for a maximum of two years.

 

b) Location: WIPO Headquarters, Geneva, Switzerland.

 

c) Stipend: CHF 6,000 per month (CHF 72,000 per year).

 

d) Travel expenses: Travel expenses: one economy class ticket (return) from/to the

Fellow's place of residence by the most direct and economical route to/from Geneva.

If necessary, WIPO may provide assistance in obtaining an entry visa to Switzerland.

 

e) WIPO provides medical and accident insurance coverage during the course of the

fellowship.

 

f) WIPO will request a "carte de légitimation" for the Fellow, which serves as a

residence and work permit, from the Permanent Mission of Switzerland to the United

Nations Office and to the other international organizations in Geneva. Family

members of the Fellow are not eligible for a "carte de legitimation."

 

g) Tax and social security: Fellows shall be solely responsible for meeting any taxation

and social security obligations that may arise directly or indirectly from their contract

with WIPO.

 

5. Additional information

 

Fellows are not staff members of WIPO and the position does not lead to any employment

rights and entitlements beyond the terms of the fellowship.

videoconference) will be contacted, in which case you will be required to provide a scanned
