Bern University Library, Switzerland, serves the faculty, students and staff of Bern University as well as the general public. With a staff of 280, and a collection of around 4 million items, it provides a range of services in support of research, teaching and learning.
From August 1st, 2018, or as soon as possible thereafter, we are recruiting a
Head of Medical Libraries (80 to 100%)
The medical libraries (faculty library and four departmental libraries) with twenty staff are part of library services for medicine and science. Over recent years the library has extended substantially its collections and increased its services to teaching and research (lectures, courses and one-on-one support on systematic searching and academic writing, mediated searches for systematic reviews, clinical guidelines, HTAs, etc.). Library management are committed to continue the development of the medical libraries.
As head of the medical library services you will make sure that in your area of responsibility, services are delivered in a focused, professional, and efficient manner. You will continue developing modern and innovative library services, and liaise with the medical faculty. You have responsibility for budget and personnel planning. You will take a lead role in the selection and evaluation of the medical e-journal collection. Competent and committed teams will support you in your work. As a member of the senior management board, you will be actively involved in the strategic planning of the whole university library.
We are looking for a focused person with initiative, commitment to customer service, and excellent communication skills, with a degree, preferably in medicine or science. Ideally, you would also hold a library or information science qualification. You should have leadership and project management experience, a good overview of teaching and research in the medical field, and a thorough understanding of the concept of evidence-based medicine. You should be familiar with current developments in information and communication technology. Fluency in English and German or at least basic command of German and the willingness to improve your competence is expected.
