Hi all,
I just posted a new blogpost on our blog about next WLIC.
1. Satellite Meeting
Last month, we were promoting a satellite conference on welcoming and managing LGBTQI+ staff in libraries. It is an ambitious program that we wanted to develop and we still hope to receive your many communications. Entitled: « 'The Library is open': creating safe working environments for LGBTQ+ library employees and marketing supportive LGBTQ+ services », papers adressing the following themes are very welcome :
  • Human resources policies and practices for diversity and inclusion in libraries, particularly with regards to the LGBTQ+ communities.
  • The experiences of LGBTQ+ individuals in both personal and professional life, including issues of equal opportunity, respect and acceptance.
  • The impact of management on the quality of life and professional performance of LGBTQ+ individuals.
  • Opportunities for Libraries to support and promote diversity and inclusion for the LGBTQ+ community.
  • Collecting LGBT+ documents and related cataloguing policies.

2. the SIG's Open Session
During the congress in Rotterdam, the SIG LGBTQ+ Users will also offer a session around LGBT archives. IFLA's LGBTQ+ Users Special interest group invites you to participate in its WLIC2023 open session on LGBTQ+ archives. Title is : "From Personal Narratives to Collective Memory: Archiving LGBTQ+ Lives and communities" (Call For Papers). This conference aims to bring together experts, practitioners, activists, and scholars to explore issues related to the collection, preservation, and dissemination of archives related to the LGBTQ+ community.
Aim is to underline the importance of LGBTQ+ Archives and the issues we can face. I would be interested by a focus on how working together withother institutions, association and civil society can help. The importance of collecting, the issues faced and importance of partnership to overcome theses issues.
We invite proposals for papers that address the following themes:
  • The collection and preservation of LGBTQ+ archives;
  • Challenges related to access and use of LGBTQ+ archives;
  • Innovative practices to make LGBTQ+ archives more accessible and inclusive;
  • Critical perspectives on LGBTQ+ archives;
  • Ethical issues related to the collection, preservation, and dissemination of LGBTQ+ archives.

3. Subject Analysis and Access Section open session
I have to underline the Subject Analysis and Access Section open session. The theme will turn around "Identifiers for identities: Rectifying the (mis)representation of demographic groups"
The CFP reminds un that each knowledge organisation system (KOS) comes with its own cultural perspective, its worldview, and its unique way of putting concepts into structure. Working with vocabularies, thesauri, and classification systems requires an understanding of their respective cultural backgrounds and recognizing the power of standardised language to ascribe identities.
In recent years, knowledge organisation systems have been criticised as to how they represent marginalized groups, be they defined by ethnicity, socio-economic status, ability, sexual orientation, or gender. The cultural competence of any given KOS must be questioned in order to avoid repeating discriminatory stereotypes and misrepresentations. What labels do KOS provide for different groups? Under which generic terms are they grouped? What is the cultural context of the given name and what implications arise from the heading/name chosen or its position within a semantic hierarchy? Can there ever be a neutral representation?
In this open session they want to highlight projects that rectify some of the misrepresentations, eliminating the prejudices (or biases) of the past and embrace greater inclusivity in KOS. Themes can be :
  • Changes in KOS relating to demographic group naming, subjects, and classification.
  • Changes in metadata policies for identity terms.
  • Lessons learned from related projects (changes in editorial processes and/or practices, change management, management of legacy data, reclassification, and other relevant projects)
  • Impact from the implementation of KOS changes to editorial processes and metadata creation workflows.
  • Impact from the implementation of KOS changes to users of metadata and access to information resources.
  • On a meta-level: thoughts on the "standardisability" of names for specific demographic groups in KOS: Have we reached the end of standardisability?
  • KOS editorial process: Integration of individual demographic groups in the review and development of related KOS and KOS concepts.
Please do spread these informations and CFP in your own networks so that we get plenty of submissions !
