Adult Education in Europe
InfoNet Newsletter 2/2014 Introducing InfoNet Newsletter 2/2014: PIAAC – voices behind the study
Bernhard Schmidt-Herta, Johanna Gebrande, Jens Friebe: Competencies in later lifeThe authors look into the limitations of PIAAC. They argue that "the data provides no evidence for any conclusions on factors determining literacy or other skills, nor does it yield knowledge about the consequences of illiteracy". They stress that the study is not neutral, "but inspired by politics and interests of the OECD", resulting in a strong focus on skills related to employability. Finally they introduce another study, CiLL, which analyses the 65+ part of the population not covered by PIAAC.Citizens Panel – Skills: building blocks for goals In this article five learners from four European countries tell the stories of their learning needs and comments on central PIAAC claims about adults' work place skills. The "wish lists" of all five of them have one thing in common: the desired skills are related to a specific job. Skills are building blocks of future goals and dreams. PIAAC seems to have given high-profile backing to adult education advocates who have been beating the drum about the importance of lifelong learning for decades. In this article advocates from Slovakia, Spain and the UK explains how they used the study. What we did with PIAAC – advocates at work Do you think PIAAC testing was flawed in your country? In the article Rose Falgás from Spain writes that the Spanish adult educators feel PIAAC testing was flawed in their country. LLinE calls to organizations and individuals with similar experiences to share them via LLinE.
